Edge Import Competency Model: Bulk Self-Service Creation
Administrators can now create and manage competency models at scale using Edge Import bulk uploads and APIs, replacing manual, project-based processes. A two-step template workflow with built-in validation ensures data accuracy, faster rollouts, and stronger governance.
What's New
- Create competency models in bulk via Edge Import using a dedicated model template
- Associate competencies to models using a separate association template
- Built-in data validation that flags invalid records with specific error messages
- Self-service model creation that reduces dependency on support and external teams
- Mandatory and predefined field enforcement for consistent, accurate model data
- Models become usable only after at least one competency is successfully associated

Description
The new Edge Import Competency Model feature enables administrators to create and manage competency models at scale through bulk uploads and APIs, eliminating reliance on manual, project-based execution. The workflow is a simple two-step process: administrators first create competency models using a dedicated template, then associate competencies to those models using a separate association template.
All data is validated during the import process. The model template includes five fields — Model ID, Model Title, Description, Model Category, and Group by Category Type — where Model ID and Model Title are mandatory and the category fields are predefined and sourced from the portal. The association template contains three mandatory fields: Model ID, System ID, and Target. A model becomes usable only after at least one competency is successfully added.
Business Need
Rolling out a competency framework across a large enterprise has traditionally been manual, time-consuming, and dependent on external or support teams. This created slow implementations, operational overhead, and a higher risk of data errors.
By moving competency model management into a self-service, scalable Edge Import workflow, organizations can prepare and validate data in bulk, catch issues early, and deploy models with confidence. The result is faster rollouts, fewer errors, reduced reliance on project-based execution, and cleaner, more consistent competency data that improves downstream evaluation and performance experiences.
Key Features
- Administrators can create competency models in bulk via Edge Import using a dedicated model template.
- Competencies can be associated to models using a separate association template.
- Built-in data validation flags invalid records in an error section with specific, actionable error messages.
- Self-service model creation reduces dependency on support and external implementation teams.
- Mandatory and predefined fields are enforced to ensure consistent and accurate model data.
- Models become usable only after at least one competency is successfully associated to them.
Deployment & Considerations
This feature is currently available in the Stage environment for the current release. Templates are obtained from the Get a Template guide by selecting the category and type as Model, then choosing the Competency Model Load option for the model template and the Add Competency to Model option for the association template.
Administrators should note that when entering the Competency System ID in the association template, the 10- prefix must not be included, as it is applied automatically by the system. Loads are run from New Loads by selecting the Model Competency category and type and applying an existing or new configuration. Appropriate Edge Import permissions are required, and administrators should review the load report after each import to identify and correct flagged records.
