Description
The Performance Assistant for Managers is an embedded, AI-powered capability within Cornerstone Performance that surfaces directly inside manager review tasks. Accessible through a persistent button, it opens as a dedicated side panel alongside the review, allowing managers to continue working while interacting with the assistant. It synthesizes employee review data and skill profile data into concise summaries, recurring themes, accomplishments, strengths, and focus areas.
Managers can use predefined prompts for common workflows such as performance summaries, key strengths, development areas, skill summaries, and one-on-one talking points, or submit free-text questions for more flexible exploration. The assistant understands conversational context across multi-step interactions, maintains source attribution, and clearly reflects data limitations when information is incomplete. It is available both during in-progress reviews and after reviews are completed and submitted.
Business Need
Managers preparing for performance reviews typically need to understand an employee's overall progress, trends, and development areas before writing comments and holding a conversation. Today this often requires manually reviewing multiple sections and relying on memory or external notes to structure meaningful feedback, which is time-consuming and inconsistent across teams.
By reducing the time spent gathering and interpreting information, the Performance Assistant helps managers prepare more efficiently and confidently, improving review quality, manager preparedness, and consistency across the organization. It repositions performance reviews as a development-focused, value-driven process rather than a purely administrative task, while keeping managers in control of all final review inputs.
Key Features
- Managers can access an embedded AI Performance Assistant directly within manager review tasks through a persistent button that opens a dedicated side panel alongside the review.
- The assistant offers predefined prompts for performance summaries, key strengths, development areas, skill summaries, and one-on-one talking points.
- Managers can submit free-text questions for flexible exploration, and the assistant understands conversational context to follow up on specific points such as a single low rating.
- Conversation history lets managers revisit previous AI-generated responses, and a copy action enables them to reuse responses directly in review comments or notes.
- Each AI response includes a feedback mechanism and transparent source attribution, with guardrails that keep managers in control and responses grounded only in available data.
- A four-layer enablement model—platform, module, feature, and step-level—gives administrators governed, targeted control over where AI assistance is introduced.
Deployment & Considerations
This feature is generally available with the July 2026 release for single architecture customers using Cornerstone Performance, available with UAT on stage environments and with the production release on production environments. It is off by default and governed by a layered activation model: platform-level AI must be enabled, the Reviews module AI switch must be enabled, the Performance Review Assistant backend feature must be activated via a work order request, and the assistant must then be enabled per individual manager review step during review task setup.
No new permissions are added with this release. Known limitations include: the initial release supports only employee review data and skill profile data as insight sources (learning, feedback, and check-ins data are excluded); the assistant is available to managers only and is not employee-facing; it supports only task-central based reviews, so legacy reviews customers cannot access it; and AI responses are supported in English only, with a guidance message shown for unsupported languages. The assistant provides guidance and summaries only—it does not generate ratings, make decisions, or auto-submit content, and insight quality depends on the availability of review and skills data.
